Doctor, Transvestites and Transsexuals: Towards a Theory of Cross-Gender Behavior, Plenum Publishing Corporation, 1988. A basic study that attempts to map out a cross-gendered and cross- dressing social behaviors. Leslie Feinberg, Transgendered Warriors: Making History from Joan of Arc to RuPaul, Boston, Beacon Press, 1996. Feinberg's book is a wonderful mixture of autobiography and historical examination of transgendered outlaws. I came out convinced of the possibility of more than two genders. Marjorie Garber, Vested Interests: Cross-Dressing & Cultural Anxiety, New York, Routledge, Chapman and Hall, 1992. Excellent cultural study of cross-dressing, ranging from transvestism to transsexualism Bernice L. Hausman, Changing Sex: Transexualism, Technology, and the Idea of Gender, Durham, Duke University Press, 1995. Hausman deconstructs current notions of transsexuality as a disorder of gender identity by showing how medical technology has made the emergence of new identities possible. Dave King, The Transvestite and the Transsexual: Public Categories and Private Identities, Avebury, 1993. King embarks upon a sociological analysis of the meanings attributed to transvestism and transsexuality. Victoria Kolakowski, "The Concubine and the Eunuch: Queering Up the Breeder's Bible, in Our Families, Our Values: Snapshots of Queer Kinship, ed. by Robert E. Goss & Amy Adams Squires Strongheart, Haworth Press, 1997. Kolakowski provides a transgendered reading of the scriptures, reclaiming a vision of hope for transsexuals and all gender benders. Frank Lewins, Transsexualism in Society: A Sociology of Male to Female Transsexuas, Paul & Company, 1995. Lewins challenges current medical and feminist critique of transsexualism. He argues for a widening psychosexual identities. Gordene Olga MacKenzie, Transgender Nation, Bowling Green State University, 1994. This book examines the change of male-to-female transsexuals from a sociological and sociopolitial perspective. Richard F. Docter, Transvestites and Transsexuals: Toward a Theoy of Cross Gender Behavior, New York, The Plenum Press, 1988. Docter presents ten years of research on the issues of transvestism and transsexualism. |
