How I came to learn I was gay
Hey. My name is Jay and I would like to tell you my story. It
is short but powerful. I will title my account the “Story in the
bathroom.” The reason I like this title is because I found
myself while in the bathroom. What do I mean? I was in high
school and I was taking a shower. I remember the very day
and time – it was a Saturday afternoon. A buddy of mine was
also taking a shower. I saw him but I had never really noticed
before his sexy body. Of course, he had nothing on there in
the shower . . . just then I felt a warm thunder-like blast in my
heart and to tell you the truth I had never felt a warm feeling
like this before.
I didn't know how to handle my feelings . . . so I told my dad . . .
who got me into counseling
I kept this experience all to myself until I finished high school.
But just before I did my high school exams, the feeling
became stronger and I had to tell someone or break and bust
and kiss someone. And believe me, this was something I had
not felt before so I had no idea how to deal with it. So I
phoned my dad and I told him what was happening with me in
this high school life. The first thing he did was take me to a
counselor and then to a church pastor. But it was all in vain.
I pretended to be better . . . but years later I told dad I really
wasn't
So I decided to lie and to tell him that I had changed because
I could tell it was killing him inside. I painted a false picture of
myself to cover up my true feelings. But I still had to do
something. I wanted to find out if I was alone or if others had
this same hot feeling that they were sealing off, too, and
alone like me. But I came to realize that I was alone. As
weeks went by and then months, and after finishing my
university I had to tell my dad the truth. We talked through it
all and now he is kinder about it and accepting.
I am happy and proud as a gay man
I have lived my life being happy and confident knowing that I
am gay and that I love being gay, and that I am one proud
gay policeman in Kenya.

Why you'll see no pictures and no names of gay East Africans on this website:
|
"In October 2006, a local newspaper published a list of names of suspected gays and lesbians. The gay rigths group says several people whose names appeared on the list lost jobs and were mistreated by their families."
