John Doner, d. 2014

In a YouTube posting dated May 22, 2014, Rev. Dr. Nancy Wilson said:

I want to say congratulations to John Doner for amazing work in all these decades in Latin America for the good news of God’s unconditional love.

John we have always benefited from a wonderful partnership with you through Other Sheep and really consider you a founder of MCC (ICM) in Latin America.

I know that you have given your life. You have travelled, you have counseled, you have taught and preached. You have loved God’s people.  You have brought mercy and compassion and leadership to a place that has really needed leadership in order to thrive and grow.

We thank you for being in that founding generation of leaders that really made the unconditional love of God and God’s justice available in new ways. Thank you and I know that in retirement God will continue to use you and bless your ministry for many, many years to come. Thank you for your friendship John.  Thank you for the many gifts that you have brought to us to Metropolitan Community Churches.  God bless you.

You cannot express in a few words the impact of a visionary. And that was John: a dreamer and visionary. A person who strongly believed that even in postmodern times, the Gospel is still good news for those living in the margins. If I could choose a term to define his ministry I would say “bridge builder”, as he was a person that helped people to find their spiritual bridges and helped people to repair their mistrust in communities of faith. He was a key person in establishing Metropolitan Community Churches as a strong church in the region and his collaboration with our queer Biblicist, Tom Hanks, is invaluable. The last time that I saw him was in May this year, and he was planning and dreaming about a strong MCC in Mexico City. Visionaries and dreamers never die, they continue living in the seeds of dreams, in the hope for a better world that all of us carry deep in our hearts. John Doner: “presente”!
